In 1883, BNSF predecessor Northern Pacific Railroad arrived in Missoula and transformed the small trade and lumber town into a bustling regional hub. The city still thrives along these tracks today, with historic landmarks like the Renaissance Revival depot and steam locomotive No. 1356, to remind everyone of Missoula’s rich rail legacy.

Today, more than 300 BNSF employees are based in Missoula. They live and work in a place of incredible natural beauty, surrounded by mountains, rivers, and open skies. But the region also comes with its challenges. Cold temperatures and heavy snow sometimes require extra locomotives or shorter trains, and the mountain pass between Elliston and Helena adds another layer of complexity. But the city itself offers plenty of reasons to stay.

“The outdoor activities in the area around Missoula seem to be the big thing that draws and keeps people here,” said Jim Bieber, director of engineering. “Our employees are passionate about their jobs. The generosity that everyone has to their fellow employees and neighbors makes it a very special place to work and live.”
