BNSF is set to assume operations and maintenance of the Montana Rail Link (MRL) Subdivision, offering MRL employees an opportunity to join BNSF’s team. The MRL line plays a crucial role in BNSF’s northern transcontinental network, facilitating the transport of goods to the West Coast.
MRL’s origins trace back to the Northern Pacific Railway, chartered by Congress in 1864. In 1970, the Northern Pacific Railway merged with three other major railways to become Burlington Northern (BN), a predecessor of BNSF.
“We are excited to welcome the MRL team,” said Katie Farmer, president and CEO of BNSF. “They know this railroad better than anyone, and we’re proud to have them join BNSF. The line will become the MRL Subdivision of our Montana Division in recognition of the shared heritage of BNSF and MRL.”
