The “Track to Zero” awards have been announced! The Montana Department of Transportation was one of four state Departments of Transportation to receive this special recognition for its dedication to improving grade crossing safety in communities across the state. This inaugural awards initiative, the first of its kind, aims to reduce grade crossing incidents across BNSF’s 32,500-mile network. Some examples of railroad crossing safety actions include:

  • Installing grade separations at crossings
  • Upgrading signal systems at crossings
  • Testing new crossing safety technologies

“Grade crossing safety is an integral part of BNSF’s operations and culture. It involves daily cooperative efforts between the railroad and the more than 5,000 communities in 28 states (and three Canadian provinces) we serve.” – BNSF Assistant Director of Public Projects Richard Scott
