The Hampson family’s connection to the railroad spans multiple generations. Current torchbearer, Ben Hampson, began his career as an electrician with Montana Rail Link in 2004, which has since merged with BNSF to become the MRL subdivision. Growing up, Ben’s father instilled in him a passion for railroading and a commitment to safety. Their home was filled with an array of industrial equipment, so Ben and his siblings quickly became versed in how to properly handle tools and remain safe by wearing face masks, gloves, and ear protection. These experiences helped shape Ben’s career path even to this day.
“I have been involved with safety in many ways,” Ben Hampson said. “I was on the Livingston area safety committee for five years, where I held the president position for years. I also ran our weekly safety meetings at the shops for those five years and was involved in the Operation Lifesaver program for 15 years.”
The acquisition of MRL by BNSF symbolizes a homecoming for Ben, who appreciates the opportunities and stability the railroad has provided for his family. He says he hopes future Hampson generations will continue this enduring legacy.
