Women Make a Difference for Safety at BNSF BNSF’s safety vision is that every accident or injury is preventable and that requires a culture of commitment, resources, training, tools and technology. BNSF recently highlighted some examples of how women are putting their stamp on workplace safety.
Jessa Shepard, division engineer, Billings, Montana, joined BNSF in 1997 in the track maintenance department, working to ensure that the railroad tracks are safe and reliable. Today, her team maintains some 1,400 miles of single mainline track in the extreme conditions of Montana and portions of Wyoming and North Dakota. The relationships she’s cultivated with her team helped them to achieve a huge accomplishment in 2020: to complete the year injury-free. 
Jessa Shepard Jennifer Muñoz, chief dispatcher for BNSF’s northern Powder River Division which includes eastern Wyoming, works with other dispatchers in BNSF’s command center, or Network Operations Center. While effective communication is essential for all BNSF operations, it is crucial for train dispatchers – the railroad’s version of air traffic controllers. It’s also critical to have a safety-oriented mindset, or as Muñoz puts it, “Safety has to be a lifestyle.”

Employee Spotlight: Anna Delheimer When communities want to deliver infrastructure projects that cross, intersect or parallel BNSF’s network in some way, BNSF’s Public Projects team is the point of contact. Manager of Public Projects Anna Delheimer acts as a liaison between public agencies and the railroad for projects in Idaho, Montana, and North Dakota. 
Delheimer plays a key role in moving along critical public projects that benefit both the railroad and the communities it serves. She’s also a great example of the many women who help shape the railroad industry. Learn more about Anna Delheimer and her work with public projects here.
Supporting Our Communities
The BNSF Railway Foundation invests in the communities across the 28 states through which BNSF operates, and where BNSF employees live, work and volunteer. Recent donations include: Celebrating with Students in Difficult Times The Goshen County School District based in Torrington, WY is committed to preparing students to become career and college ready citizens. The district partners with families and the community to provide an engaging and challenging education in a safe and positive environment. BNSF Railway Foundation donated to the 2021 After-Prom Celebration, a much-needed event after the challenges of 2020. 
Providing Opportunities for Kids to Thrive Boys & Girls Club of Missoula County inspires and guides young people to develop positive values and realize their full potential as productive, responsible and caring citizens through quality out of school time programming. BNSF Railway Foundation contributed $5,000 to support the 2020-2021 After-School Club program at a time when the Boys & Girls Club’s role as a source of community, a resource for guidance and security, and a vehicle for connecting with opportunity is more critical than ever before.
